Trauma Therapy and PTSD Treatment

721125190You feel tethered by a heavy anchor.

That terrible thing happened long ago, but you remember it as vividly as if it happened yesterday. Just thinking about it makes you cringe with pain and terror.

It seemed best to bury the event deep inside. Silently suffering, you try to pretend it wasn’t real. The memories are disjointed and foggy anyway. Did it really happen?

Constant worry and intense fear linger in your mind. You feel nervous or scared when anything out of the ordinary happens.

Relationships are a struggle. Even when you’re in one, you feel alone.

Trauma weighs down your life. To cope, you avoid places and activities that remind you about it, numb out completely, or stay so busy you can’t possibly think about anything else.

When you least expect it, a flood comes.

Just when your guard is down, overwhelming memories surge. The smallest thing sets you off: something your co-worker said, a whiff of cologne, or a door slamming. You have a traumatic flashback.

Immediately, you go into fight or flight. You’re defensive, angry, reactive, and panicked. Everything feels out of control.

Or your brain freezes. You completely shut down. For a moment, you’re living outside your body. You don’t even recognize yourself.

When the storm settles, you’re struck with shame, grief, depression, and confusion. Then the hurtful self-talk begins: “It’s my fault,” I’m crazy,” “I’m not good enough,” etc.

1109725619Trauma surfaces in many ways.

Trauma happens from a single event like a car crash, accidental injury, medical procedure, death of a loved one, life disappointment, or blindsiding breakup.

It can occur from repeating events like being abused, assaulted, bullied, humiliated, neglected, or abandoned.

Long, lingering experiences like a chronic illness or cancer treatment can be traumatic. Even prolonged periods of everyday stress can cause trauma symptoms.

And trauma can surface from intense subcultures where high performance and superhuman feats are required, like high-level athletes, healthcare professionals, and military veterans.

Sometimes, people who suffer from chronic fatigue, Crohn’s disease, chronic pain, panic attacks, anxiety, depression, ADHD, ADD, OCD, and sleep problems have trauma as the core cause. Once the trauma is treated, a lot of these symptoms clear up.

You are stuck in a sink or swim cycle.

You’ve made it through many difficult things in your life. But these memories have so much power over you! Just when you start paddling again, something else pulls you down. Nothing seems to work long-term.

Through no fault of yours, your brain is stuck in a trauma response. It can’t process what happened logically. The instinctive part of your brain (limbic system) hijacks the driver’s seat to protect you. The problem is, it’s stuck in a survival loop long after it needs to hand back the wheel.

There is no way for the rational, verbal part of your brain (prefrontal cortex) to organize and make sense of what happened. That’s why talk therapy usually doesn’t work.

2061402422Let’s pull you out of deep waters. How Trauma recovery works.

There is hope. I have a therapy treatment solution to get you out of this cycle.

We will use a step-by-step approach that uniquely combines art therapy and memory reprocessing narrative therapy (like EMDR), parts work (like Internal Family Systems, IFS), and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to rewire healthy communication in the brain.

Specifically, we will reconnect the images and emotions of your experience (right brain) with a coherent timeline and logical thoughts (left brain). The trauma becomes a cohesive story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Now, you can talk about the experience without being drowned by emotions. There’s relief from triggers and symptoms that used to impact your daily function. The memories are far less intense.

Most of all, your body and brain now believe you are safe, and the trauma is over. You can finally relax.
